Nieuwefontein Empowerment Centre

NieuwefonteinEmpowerment Center (NEC) is a rehabilitation and recovery center situated in the beautiful Karoo, approximately halfway between Cape Town and Johannesburg. Substance abuse in South Africa is rising at a rapid rate and for over a decade NEC has been facilitating the restoration of lives and maintenance thereafter, of all our residents. NEC offers a solution for everyone who suffers from chemical substance abuse, prescription medication addiction, and alcohol addiction. We are a private facility, not funded by the Government.

Anyone who has endured trying times as a victim of chemical substance abuse, including prescription drugs, can get all of the help that they need in a loving caring environment here at Nieuwefontein Empowerment Center. We offer a long term treatment plan, which removes the resident from his / her environment where the problem developed and has been maintained.

  Facilities at NEC

In trying to create a holistic approach to treatment NEC has facilities aimed at encouraging personal fitness and a promoting and healthy lifestyle.

We view the physical component of recovery as having a vital role to play in creating a sustainable and life-lasting recovery.

NEC has a wide range of facilities available on our property, equipped for the sole purpose of supporting a therapeutic environment, including:

o Pool

o Studies

o Hiking

o Gym

o Bird Watching

o Wi-Fi

o Volleyball

o Soccer

o Education

o Table Tennis

o Darts

o Aerobics

o   Musical Instruments

In addition to all of this we also have a hall enabling us to present prepared lectures and to provide training and education.

*After a certain period of time and progress residents might be allowed to go on excursions such as Ab-Sailing, Golf etc.

The diagram above illustrates how the disease of addiction affects both our mind and body. As chronic addicts, we get caught in a vicious cycle and are unable to break free on our own. Understanding addiction cycle will help us realize how this disease operates and why we need to look outside ourselves for a solution to recover.

Drugs become our number one priority in life.

Drug abuse disrupts our brain’s communication system

The way our brain nerve cells send, receive, and process information becomes abnormal

Our reaction towards drugs becomes abnormal – we take more despite harmful consequences

We are not aware we suffer from a disease

Phoenix House - Addiction Rehabilitation Centre

Tucked away in the historic suburb of Sophiatown, Phoenix House Addiction Rehabilitation Centre offers intensive in- and out-patient treatment for drug and alcohol dependence. With a heritage dating back to 1973, Phoenix House has a longstanding reputation for their effective work with addicts and alcoholics, and have had a significant impact on the many lives of patients and their families.

Building on the foundation of its established legacy, Phoenix House has treatment programmes of varying lengths based on the Minnesota Model of Care1 which integrates the profound wisdom of the 12 Step Programme of recovery, one of the most effective grass roots movements of the last century, with the continuous educational and technical advances of a multidisciplinary team of professionals.

The programme consists of intensive therapy, including participation in groups and one-on-one sessions with our addiction counsellors and social workers, as well as educational groups and aftercare sessions. Motivation for change is a significant factor for successful treatment and we believe that the 12 Step approach offers the greatest opportunity for recovery.

Phoenix reception

Our trained and accredited addiction counsellors, themselves long-term recovering addicts and alcoholics, are able to connect with patients because of their shared experience. In turn, patients learn to trust their counsellors because they are able to relate to them and see that recovery is possible by following their example.  Aftercare is essential to maintain sobriety after discharge. Patients are strongly encouraged to attend 12 Step Programme meetings such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

Offering support and advice to the loved ones of addicts and alcoholics is an important part of the recovery process. Phoenix House Family support and educational groups are held on Thursdays at 6pm.ToughLove runs a support group every Wednesday night at 7:30pm at Phoenix House.

Admissions to Phoenix House can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we offer intervention services to help addicts/alcoholics admit their substance abuse problem and agree to undergo treatment. Our social workers are also able to facilitate the process of a court order for the not so willing addicts.

We are contracted into most medical aid schemes and although private, Phoenix House is committed to offering affordable treatment. Our funding partner, First Health Finance ( are able to negotiate flexible payment options where required.

Reconnective Healing is often a life- changing experience, utilizing new frequencies to allow for the healing of the body, mind, and spirit. Vastly different from Reiki, Johrei, Jin Shin, Qi Gong or Pranic Healing.   Reconnective Healing is beyond ANY technique you’ve encountered

“If you’re lucky, your healing will

Come in the form you anticipate.   If

You’re really lucky, your healing

will come in a form you’ve not even

dreamed of – one which the Universe

Specifically has in mind for you.”

-Eric Pearl-

Eric Pearl is an acknowledged instrument through which The Reconnection is unfolding and being introduced to the world.   Eric ran a highly successful chiropractic practice for 12 years until one day in 1993, when patients began seeing angels and reporting miraculous healings from numerous conditions including cancers, birth disfigurements, cerebral palsy, and Aids- related diseases. The work of The Reconnection had begun.

These highly palpable energies are initiated by your Reconnective Healing Practitioner at the start of your session, and continue working with you long after your visit has ended.   Through your participation in these sessions, you will be forever changed, operating at, and attuned to, a higher frequency than ever before.

Eric Pearls work has since elicited a tremendous amount of interest from researchers and doctors worldwide.   He’s appeared on numerous radio and television programs, and his work has been documented in six books, including his own best-seller “THE RECONNECTION: HEAL OTHERS, HEAL YOURSELF”

Eric tours and teachers worldwide, activating people’s innate healing abilities, graduating thousands of Practitioners who successfully facilitate these healings in their own right.

Phumuza Recovery Centre

1 Opening potPhumuza Halfway House

(Take a break)

Make it a memorable break away with us.
Phumuza means "Take a Break" in Zulu & that is exactly what we would like you to do.

The property lends itself to an atmosphere of recovery; with ample space for the client to come to terms with their recovery.

We have 100 acres of diverse indigenous bushveld, prolific birdlife and small game.
There is a quaint lookout tower which provides an awesome view.

The terrain is fairly flat with interesting walks on well set out paths.

Phumuza offers a full board, sober living house for anyone wanting to make a full recovery from addiction. Sober living after rehab, is a critical step for the transition that every addict needs to make.

We bridge the gap from a treatment centre back into a daily living routine. Daily life follows a routine which includes meal times together, chores and relaxation.

Addicts often relapse when they suddenly get their freedom back and are faced with the triggers and stresses of daily life.

At Phumuza residents regain freedom of movement, which is progressive from month to month. It goes hand-in-hand with strong accountability and drug testing.

Residents are encouraged to enrol in studies, re-open bank accounts, find work and attend meetings.

We aim to provide a medium to long term Half-Way House facility for those who have completed treatment (either as in-patient or out-patient) at a Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre/ Out-Patient program and are in need of preparation for reintegration into society.

With a key focus on equipping residents with relevant life skills, as well as providing a nurturing environment where residents are treated with unconditional love and acceptance, Phumuza provides the perfect stepping-stone between ‘Rehabilitation Centre and Real World’.

Our location in the unspoilt bushveld of Bela Bela, away from the stresses of an urban environment, enables residents to unwind and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings whilst being able to fully focus on personal development and continue their recovery. Phumuza is founded on Christian principles and values.

We follow The Celebrate Recovery (12 Step and 8 Beatitudes) program written by Rick warren from the Saddleback Church
